Franco Mercieca is a Gozitan eye surgeon and former Labour MP who is contesting the 2026 general election on the 12th district. First elected in 2013, he served briefly as Parliamentary Secretary for the Care of the Elderly before resigning in 2014 amid controversy over continuing private medical practice while holding a government post. He remained an MP until 2017 but did not contest the 2017 or 2022 elections. He announced his return at a Labour Party rally in Żejtun after accepting an invitation from the Prime Minister.
